Maine Mineral & Gem Museum

We had only been in Bethel a few days when we noticed something different and quite shiny. As we walked about, we couldn't help but see that the ground was sort of twinkling. We picked up piece after piece of this stuff that looked like gleaming sheets of super thin plastic. We were educated and spurred on to discover more as we became rockhounds at The Sluice here in the campground.

This shiny matter under our feet and covering our shoes like glitter is a flaky rock known as Mica. It is ground down and added to many common products including cosmetics because of its gorgeous shimmer. It took a little while to get past the fact that it would be on everything and embrace the glitter.

As we dug into the topic further, we learned about Maine's place in gemstone history. It is a world-famous spot for appreciating and studying gems and lays claim to the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum. How fortunate we are to be here in the town where this museum is found.

We were excited to explore but cautious as to how some of the information would be presented. Although it is disheartening to witness these most amazing gems and minerals on display with no mention of our Creator God who incorporated them into His creation, we definitely appreciated how well done the exhibits are.  This is a beautiful world-class museum. As far as the information being brought to us through the view chosen, that came as no surprise. It did not hinder us from thoroughly enjoying the beauty shown here. Much work and dedication went into making this extensive collection available.
