Fort Clinch

This 19th century fort is located northeast of Fernandina Beach at the northern tip of Amelia Island.

It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972.
Each tour of the fort is enriched by a dedicated staff who brings history to life through reenactment and explanation. They provide living history for all who desire to learn more. We spent a couple of hours freely roaming the grounds on our self-guided tour.

We were extremely fortunate to have our adventure enhanced by three unexpected sightings.
As we began walking the grounds this submarine was heading out to sea. It was a moment to stop and take in as these sailors were busy each doing their part and many along the beach saw them off.

A bald eagle soared above us as we wrapped up our tour and headed to this gravel path which we shared with the beautiful animals below.

We expected a nice day trip with some historical value, but this outing definitely produced more. History, nature, and nostalgia combined to create a satisfying and memorable Fort Clinch excursion.
